Texas A&M University

Off Campus Survival Tips

  • There are other sports other than football at Texas A&M and most of them have their own set of traditions and are just as fun!
  • There are hospitals off campus, you have to know where you're going.
  • Movies are only $4 at Cinemark with a student ID.
  • There are two main libraries on campus for studying. Evans Library and West Campus Library, use them.
  • Make a contract with your room mate or at least some type of agreement as to what each of you expects from the other.
  • Learn the bus routes both on and off campus; this will save you from numerous parking tickets.
  • Parking on game days is pretty much non-existent.
  • Always prepare for unexpected costs.
  • Learn to cook at home. Living off fast food is unhealthy and expensive.
  • Make sure you pay your rent and utilities ON TIME.
  • CARPOOL is free, non judgmental, and will pick you up from anywhere in the Bryan/College Station area.
  • Shop at discount stores.
  • Tuesdays have great deals nearly anywhere you go to eat.
  • Buy used stuff because it is less likely to be stolen or damaged, plus its cheaper.
  • Call you parents and let them know how you're doing. Even if they don't say it, they worry about you.
  • Make a trip back home every so often, but not every weekend.
  • Take every opportunity you can to make a friend, even in your classes. College is where you will start to form friendships that will take you out into the real world and alot of times its all about who you know and not necessarily about what you know.
  • 90% of what you learn in college is outside of the classroom.
  • Textbooks will only get more expensive each semester. Set up a bartering system amongst your friends to alleviate some of your costs.
  • There is free tutoring on campus if you need it.
  • There are writing centers in both Evans and WCL and they will proof read your papers for free and give you feedback.
  • Each off campus tutoring company has subjects that they are strong at. (A+ for your sciences, 4.0 for business, etc.) Don't be afraid to use them.
  • Get to know your professors; they will be the ones who determine your grade at the end of the semester and wont have much sympathy if you haven't made an effort.
  • YOU HAVE 300 FREE PRINTS IN OPEN ACCESS LABS!
  • Balancing your time is one of the biggest things you will learn as a college student. Learn it early and things will only get easier.
